AI and the Iconography of Cathedrals at Christmas

For those adrift in the Gulf of Paria, the towers were a guiding landmark on the 19th-century Port of Spain waterfront. The bell towers were originally built entirely of limestone, but earthquake tremors in 1825 caused damage, and the towers that now flank the Western door were rebuilt in wood.
The Cathedral was constructed in the shape of a Latin Cross. The northern and southern transepts were designed as sanctuaries of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, respectively. Its walls were built from limestone quarried in the Hills of Laventille, and in 1857, the Cathedral was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica by Pope Pius IX.
Today, sunlight filters through the Cathedral’s rose windows in the transept, diffusing through the interlacing fillets and trellis work to cast a soft light on the apse tile design of the floor. The raised pulpit is rich with immense religious symbolism. At night, under the glow of chandeliers, the Cathedral’s Stations of the Cross, designed by Joseph Sibbel, whisper in muted ivory pink tones to the faithful.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral embodies a blend of Georgian and Gothic architectural styles. Hammer-beams of carved mahogany and magnificent stained-glass windows lend grace and grandeur to its structure. The foundation stone was laid in 1816, and the church was completed in 1818 and consecrated on May 25th, 1823. The original Trinity church, a wooden structure, was destroyed by fire in 1808.
A few years ago, during renovations, stained glass windows were discovered inside a stonework wall of the All Saints Anglican Church in Trinidad. These windows had been entombed within the church walls during World War II as a protective measure against destruction. Today, in places such as Lviv and Kharkiv, churches continue this tradition of cultural preservation – safeguarding paintings, stained-glass windows, and sacred relics from the impacts of war. In Trinidad and Tobago, the All Saints Church erected in the mid-19th century in the neo-Gothic style, stands as a historical landmark celebrated for its beautiful architecture and stunning stained glass.
In the Age of AI, it is now possible to use an AI-driven App to immerse worshipers, visitors, and tourists in the stories unfolding across the stained glass windows of Trinity Cathedral, the Stations of the Cross at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and the stained glass windows of All Saints Church. With such an AI-driven App, we can decipher the legends and narratives depicted in these architectural masterpieces – the stained glass, pulpits, and tiled floors that together tell stories of faith and artistry.
Through an AI-driven App, visitors from anywhere in the world could experience the iconography and built heritage of these monuments in multiple languages. Developing such an indigenous AI-driven App would convene a diverse team of developers, engineers, technicians, librarians, authors, archivists, restoration and preservation experts, historians, artists, craftsmen, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and clergy. The outcome will be an experience of sacred space that moves beyond admiration, to genuine appreciation and deeper understanding.
Such an AI-driven App will require various types of algorithms. One would need to recognize objects under variable lighting conditions and from different perspectives – critical for stained glass, since the morning light streaming across the Savannah into All Saints Church tells one story, a different one by noon, and by twilight, it becomes a Book of Revelations.
Once the algorithm identifies an object, it could transition seamlessly to facial recognition, pinpointing the precise design or figure on each glass panel. Even the length of a character’s tunic within a panel tells a story of its own.
Cathedral stained glass windows are typically composed of about thirty panels, each illustrating colours, crests, symbols, characters, and scriptural events. As we bless ourselves with holy water at the entrance, we genuflect on tiles displaying patterns of Sierpinski triangles and other fractal geometric designs, gazing upon the Stations of the Cross, the pulpit, and the altar.
Building an AI-driven App to reveal these buildings’ secrets would require scholars to sift through vast amounts of knowledge for integration into the AI application. Developers would be tasked with creating a detailed profile for each panel, artefact or architectural feature. The narrative output must be concise and accurate, while also offering opportunities for deeper exploration and richer contexts.
