Governments have recently made it a requirement for student and scholar visa applicants to set their social media accounts to public. This has caused some panic and misunderstanding about privacy and risk assessments. We live in an unusual world. Much of the contemporary digital identity debate and citizen security revolves around pluralistic models of digital identity that create pseudonymity, and one-per-person ID systems that utilize zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP).

In the Age of AI, the concept of identity has been transformed. With the deployment of AI-generated forgeries and Deepfakes, individuals now choose to create and maintain digital identities for various purposes, ranging from social interactions and e-commerce to financial transactions and political persuasions. As AI continues to evolve, so too does our understanding of our digital identities.

Pseudonymity is the state of using a sham or fabricated name, instead of one’s real name, online. It is a separate form of anonymity because, while it conceals the true identity of a person, it still allows for a steady and identifiable online presence, unlike complete anonymity, where there is no known identifier. Pseudonymity involves using aliases to protect one’s digital identity and privacy.

It involves the use of avatars and screen names to facilitate online expression and interaction while safeguarding personal identity. This strategy offers benefits such as shielding privacy, averting context collapse, upholding freedom of speech, and safeguarding against online surveillance. Anonymity ensures a user remains completely unidentifiable, while pseudonymity allows a user to operate under a consistent but false identity, offering a balance between privacy and accountability.

To protect all types of internet services against manipulation from sybils and bots without compromising privacy, one approach is to use zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to verify human identity. Sybils are illegitimate entities that pose as genuine users, while bots are automated programs engaged in deceptive or unsafe activities. Their presence can distort reputation, manipulate online activity, and undermine trust in networks. Sybils can also compromise the integrity and fairness of platforms by manipulating voting, spam, exploiting incentives, and harming legitimate users, damaging the reputation and trust of web3 communities.

While ZK-wrapped digital IDs can help protect internet services from manipulation by bots and AI agents, this approach still functions as a one-per-person system that poses significant risks. In real life, pseudonymity generally requires multiple accounts. In a ZK-based world, we move closer to a reality where all activity must be effectively housed under a single public identity. In a world facing escalating crises, removing the option to protect oneself via pseudonymity presents many challenges.

A pluralistic digital identity model is one solution, but a powerful alternative to this dilemma is to combine one-person identity projects with social-graph-based identity models. Social-based graph identity refers to representing an individual’s identity within a social media network, where identity is defined through relationships and interactions. This uses graph theory to model social connections, with personalities as nodes and their relationships as edges.

In simple terms, nodes are individuals within a social network, and edges illustrate relationships such as friendships, followers, influencers, and collaborators. The graph structure visualizes the overall network by showing these connections and interactions. Many people mitigate privacy risks and achieve pseudonymity by using pluralistic digital identities and fake details. To uncover the true identity of many malicious actors, governments need to see the full scope of a person’s activity. But how can governments and digital service providers verify that someone is a real human and not a bot or a sybil?

Vast agricultural lands, which once supported a billion-dollar industry in vegetables and fruits, now face acute labour shortages. If the fruits and vegetables aren’t harvested during the present heat wave due to the climate catastrophe, they will spoil, affecting food insecurity and food inflation.

Deepfakes and AI-generated forgeries that mimic voices and faces with eerie exactness, without the subject’s consent, are now the focus of pioneering legislation in Denmark. The government proposes a complete ban on unauthorized deepfake content. The world is what it is, and as we write our digital destiny, we must grasp that the world remains an unsafe place.
